The 'Monuments' project honors the ruins of Belchite, which are gradually yielding to the erosive passage of time.

The village of Belchite bore witness to one of the most harrowing battles of the Spanish Civil War. Nearly the entire settlement—1,300 buildings and most of its 4,000 residents—was destroyed or killed in the fierce conflict. The tenacity of both sides left few survivors, and the last remnants, led by the town’s right-wing mayor, were compelled to incinerate themselves within the church.

This tragic and heroic act inspired Franco to leave the ruins unrestored, preserving them as a enduring symbol and a stark reminder of the Spanish Civil War ever since.
